Family

The Sound of Rain
This is my sister Emily's website.

Emily Carson holds public sittings, small groups, and intensives in the Portland, Oregon area, delivering meditative teachings and answering questions from a source she simply calls "guidance". These teachings align with the Taoist principle of non-resistance and the Buddhist principle of non-attachment, and ultimately affirm that we are God in form and that it is only and always our own true Self that we seek. The Sound of Rain, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Emily's work, offers transcripts of these sessions on a subscription basis and sponsors her local events.
Jennifer Carson - astronomer
This is my sister Jennifer's site. It includes info on her Research Interests, Publications, Posters, and Other Stuff inclufing self defense for women and recommended reading.
UU Fellowship of San Luis Obispo County
This is my mother, the Reverend Helen Carroll's site. It gives information about her congregation in San Luis Obispo, CA.

I'm so proud of her for being outspoken in the right to marriage campaign, and joining the Marriage Equality Caravan to Mobilize Support for Equal Rights, summer 2004.

In my CD player

Putumayo - American Folk
Compilation CD put out by Putumayo of contemporary songs inspired by folk music traditions. This is the best mixed CD ever made!
Sarah Borges
I can't stop listening to Silver City!
Patty Griffin
Patty needs no introduction, but if you aren't in love with her, yet here's something to spark your interest... Every Patty Griffin album offers, often simultaneously, beauty and challenge. The depth of her lyric writing and the intensity of her singing have never relented... Griffin makes it hard to see where the personal and the political separate-or perhaps, shows us how they really don't.
Lori McKenna
"...Lori's acoustic guitar playing was spectacular as we built her songs from the ground up. I could go on and on about what the making of this CD meant to me, personally and musically. Genetically incapable of artifice, Lori McKenna doesn't simply write songs, she documents her life in word and melody..." - Lorne Entress, Producer of Bittertown
Meg Hutchinson
Boston area singer-songwriter.
The Indigo Girls
Where would I be without them?
Kris Delmhorst
Erin McKeown
Amazing.

My resume

Berklee College of Music
This is where I am when I'm not home or performing... and where I met all of the fabulous people I perform with.
SHARE Foundation
This is the organization that coordinated the delegation to El Salvador that I travelled with in 1993. Responsible for opening my eyes to there being more to the world than what I was learning in high school... inspiring me to learn Spanish... study Latin American studies in college... and so much more.

The SHARE Foundation is an international non-profit organization that accompanies poor communities in El Salvador as they work for economic justice, democracy and sustainable development alternatives at the local and national levels.
Amigos de las Americas
This is the organization that trained me to be a public health worker and sent me to work for the summer of 1994 in Tungurahua, Ecuador.

Founded in 1965, AMIGOS is a non-profit organization that provides exceptional leadership training and volunteer service opportunities in the United States and Latin America.

AMIGOS' youth-led programs and strong partnerships with international development, non-profit, and government agencies distinguish it from other international experiences.
Schools Uniting Neighborhoods
This is an organization I worked for while living in Portland, OR. They have a very interesting approach to bringing neighborhoods together by turning public schools into community centers - and keeping them open after hours.

Schools Uniting Neighborhoods creates schoolhouses where reitred neighbors help 7-year-olds with homework after school. Where refugees new to the U.S. learn to read. Where parents feel their voice is heard. Where children take music, art, and sports classes in the afternoons. SUN envisions schools as community centers dedicated to student achievement and enrichment for the whole neighborhood, providing a safe, positive environment and offering valuable social services to meet the needs of the community.
La Alianza Hispana
I worked at La Alianza Hipana's day camp while I was still in college, the summer of 1996. Then, when I returned to Boston in 2002, I took up residency there as the Education Coordinator for their afterschool program.
Everywoman's Center
I worked at the Everywoman's Center in Amherst, MA from Jan 1998-June 1999 as and Educator/Advocate and as an assistant in the Interpreter's Project while I was in school at UMass Amherst.

Everywoman's Center is a multicultural campus-based women's center established in 1972. We sponsor five different programs and two projects designed to serve the needs of the diverse cultural and linguistic populations of the University and surrounding community.

EWC's mission is to provide leadership in promoting educational access and equity for women, to empower women to take full control of their lives and to strengthen the connections among women. EWC works to stop all forms of oppression, particularly those based on gender, age, class, ethnicity, race, mental and physical ability, sexual orientation and spiritual belief.
Women's Community Association
I worked at the WCA in NM as the shelter coordinator in 2002. This was one of the most difficult times in my life and relationship, and the hardest job I've ever had...

As a private, non-profit agency, we are dedicated to the shelter from, prevention of and ending to domestic violence against all victims, including women, men and children, through our shelter, counseling, advocacy and support services for victims, and a counseling program for the aggressor to stop the violence.
Amerian Red Cross
I worked as a bi-lingual CPR instructor while living in Portland, OR in 2001.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

The Oregon Trail Chapter provides a variety of community services which are consistent with the Red Cross mission and meet the specific needs of this area, including:

* Disaster planning, preparedness and education * Relief to victims of disasters * Emergency communications between members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families * First aid and CPR training * Water safety and lifeguard training * Opportunities to donate blood and blood products

Political/Humanitarian Orgs I love

Human Rights Campaign

Mercy Corps
This organization was introduced to me by Linda Mason, the wife of Berklee College of Music's new president, Roger Brown - both of whom sit on the board.

Berklee has recently gotten involved with Mercy Corp's efforts in Darfur, Sudan. See more info here:

http://www.berklee.edu/opi/2005/0303.html

Mercy Corps alleviates suffering, poverty, and oppression by helping people build secure, productive, and just communities.

* We provide emergency relief services that assist people afflicted by conflict or disaster. * We develop sustainable communities that meet the needs of children and families. Our integrated strategies include agriculture, economic development, health, housing and infrastructure and strengthening local organizations. * We promote civil society initiatives in all our programs to encourage citizen participation, accountability, nonviolent conflict management, and the rule of law.
Military Families Speak Out
Military Families Speak Out is an organization of people who are opposed to war in Iraq and who have relatives or loved ones in the military. We were formed in November of 2002 and have contacts with military families throughout the United States, and in other countries around the world. Our membership currently includes over 2,000 military families, with new families joining daily.

As people with family members and loved ones in the military, we have both a special need and a unique role to play in speaking out against war in Iraq. It is our loved ones who are, or have been, or will be on the battlefront. It is our loved ones who are risking injury and death. It is our loved ones who are returning scarred from their experiences. It is our loved ones who will have to live with the injuries and deaths among innocent Iraqi civilians.
MoveOn.org
What is MoveOn all about? MoveOn is working to bring ordinary people back into politics. With a system that today revolves around big money and big media, most citizens are left out. When it becomes clear that our "representatives" don't represent the public, the foundations of democracy are in peril. MoveOn is a catalyst for a new kind of grassroots involvement, supporting busy but concerned citizens in finding their political voice. Our nationwide network of more than 2,000,000 online activists is one of the most effective and responsive outlets for democratic participation available today.

What does MoveOn do? When there is a disconnect between broad public opinion and legislative action, MoveOn builds electronic advocacy groups. Examples of such issues are campaign finance, environmental and energy issues, media consolidation, or the Iraq war. Once a group is assembled, MoveOn provides information and tools to help each individual have the greatest possible impact.

Coffee House Tour
"It seems like only yesterday I got to thinking about what a great idea it would be to gather as many Coffee Houses as I could into one space for all the world of fellow folkies to use in planning their cross country tours with filler spots. Then I blinked...and now look at us!  I am so very proud of our sweet little place on the web."
Indie Grrl
Indiegrrl was founded by Holly Figueroa in May of 1998 as a forum for information, networking, and conversation about independent music from a female perspective. It started with about 10 women talking about what it was like to be a woman in the industry. It continued on that way for about 6 months, gaining a few people here, and a few there.

In November of ’98, Holly decided to go to the East Coast for her first tour away from Seattle. She told the list members (there were about 30 at that time), and someone suggested that a bunch of people get together and do a mini tour. They laughingly called it the “indiegrrl tour” and announced it to three mailing lists: Folk DJ-L, folkvenu, and folkbiz. Within 24 hours, Holly had 300 messages in her mailbox, from women clamoring to be on this little upstart of a tour. That was when we all realized that there was a need for this type of network between women.

Currently Indiegrrl has over 1300 members internationally, making Indiegrrl the largest organization of its kind in the world. The Indiegrrl list welcomes women performers, DJs, managers, and booking agents, as well as men interested in women’s role in the independent music industry.

Indiegrrl welcomes, with open arms, all genres of music and has representatives from just about every genre. At this time, singer/songwriters dominate the performer roster because more acoustic musicians tour than full bands, and Indiegrrl’s network caters to touring musicians. Likewise, since Indiegrrl’s inception, the folk community, more than any other genre, has embraced it.

Indiegrrl is a not-for-profit organization. Indiegrrl does not affiliate itself with major labels, indies that are distributed by major labels, or corporate sponsors. We are self-funded and affiliate with small, independent DIY companies.
Go Girls Music
GoGirlsMusic.com is all about promoting and empowering indie women in music! Madalyn Sklar started the organization in 1996 with a vision of bringing together independent women musicians from around the country. Nine years later, GoGirlsMusic.com has become a welcome destination for women in music through networking and events. GoGirls produces the GoGirlsMusicFest, Invasion of the GoGirls @ SXSW, Battle of the Bands and GoGirlsRock! events. In the last 5 years, Sklar has spearheaded over 85 benefit showcases for various organizations including the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, MusiCares, American Liver Foundation, Nicole Brown Charitable Foundation and more. She has served on music panels at 2NMC, Dfest, DIY Convention, Rockrgrl, Invasion of the GoGirls @ SXSW, and NEMO Music Festival. She's been a judge for the Outmusic Awards from 2003-2005 and was named one of the 15 People You Should Know In the Biz by Indie-Music.com. Sklar doesn't stop there! She also runs Orbit Web Design, a web site development firm in Houston, TX; GIGPAGE.com, an online do-it-yourself calendar resource for bands and venues; Weedgrrl.com, a new music file sharing company; and IndieMusicCoach.com, providing one-on-one consulting services to musicians.
Out Music
Outmusic is a network of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered musicians and supporters. Performers, composers, lyricists, producers, recording artists, activists, promoters, press/media and even non-musicians who believe in LGBT music have joined Outmusic over the years.

Outmusic was founded in 1990 when a group of musicians met in an East Village apartment to share music and experiences. This became the open mics, which are still held monthly in New York.

Since its founding, Outmusic has participated in the community in many ways. Some years the organization sponsored festivals, other years there have been compilation CDs or special events. Of course, through it all there have always been the open mics, where new and seasoned musicians still come together with goals not unlike the original sessions: to share music and experiences in a safe and welcoming space.

Outmusic members are involved in festivals, concerts and other events. They also collaborate on projects and offer a valuable peer support system. As an outgrowth of this support and recognition among peers, 2001 introduced the first annual OUTMUSIC AWARDS (OMAs).

They manufactured and duplicated my cd. Yeah! : ) They're all fabulous people who know what customer service is - even the president who I met at the NEMO music conference in Boston last year!

We help you manufacture your CD, DVD, SACD, DualDisc or cassette project. We also help you package it creatively, promote and distribute it so it doesn't become just more clutter in your apartment. We have many worthy competitors, but in our industry you will often hear Oasis referred to as a kind of "gold standard" for quality, reliability and personal service. If this is what you're looking for, please consider entrusting your project to Oasis.
